FIFA would not have been what it is today without real football players. Having been involved in the world of gaming since the early 1990s, I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with the real footballers, received training from them, played with them at professional level and been at the same level as them. All of this gives me a unique insight and knowledge of what an aspiring football player experiences in game and how gameplay can be enhanced.
FIFA is fortunate to have worked with some of the greatest names in football: Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Steven Gerrard, Zinedine Zidane and even Pep Guardiola, to name just a few, who have been involved in our motion capture data collection. And as a result of our partnership with footballers from around the world, FIFA fans the world over have an enhanced playing experience in FIFA 22.
One of the most important developments for developers is the use of the real player motion data for Player Impact. Motion data is collected by a player when he or she performs actions such as turning on the ball, kicking it, dribbling and shooting.
A player in a top team generally has around a year’s worth of player data, which is then used to determine how players move in game. These data are then used to assess how a player moves, both when in possession of the ball and at full-stretch sprinting away.
This data is then used to create Player Impact, which occurs when a player comes into contact with another player. This determines how the player moves and can have a dramatic effect on how a player performs, just like being in a top team would make you a better player. When a player runs at speed, it will impact the player coming in contact with the player being tackled. A player who has a poor Flicks Per Minute metric will generally make poor decisions with the ball, running diagonals or directly at a player. A player who has a high Flicks Per Minute and a low pass success ratio will have better choices of where to attack the space.
Each of these top-class players – such as David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Leo Messi, Wayne Rooney and Neymar – have their own unique attributes and have already been seen in FIFA games, but their motion capture data will make a difference to players.
There are areas where we need to work on it for the next generation of Football Manager. With so many player attributes, we

It’s the world’s greatest football game and the undisputed king of the soccer kingdom.
When you think about the big-name titles on the market today it’s easy to forget that back in its early years, a title like FIFA didn’t even exist.
The original version of the game debuted in 1989 and went on to become a best-selling franchise, selling over 75 million copies to date. Today it’s still the only soccer simulation title on the market with a dedicated fan base that’s longer in the tooth than the game itself.
So it’s safe to say FIFA is something of a local game, and yet EA has managed to retain its market share against all competition and become the game industry’s behemoth.
From 1993 to 2007, FIFA took the casual gaming world by storm and poured an endless supply of releases onto the market, each pushing the game into new directions, each one becoming an influential and huge success.
But FIFA isn’t the only EA Sports football game on the market, and a growing number of highly regarded titles have appeared in the same period, alongside the many franchise spinoffs that’ve grown to reach different markets and offer new experiences and challenges to gamers.
So here we are at FIFA 22, the latest version of the franchise, which has new stadiums, new clubs, new players and new game modes. It’s a big release for the game, and the first for current generation consoles – on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – so we were keen to get the first hands-on experience with it.
The last few years have seen a trend towards more realistic football simulations. FIFA 17 was the most adventurous in years, introducing new technology that’s influenced every game since.
FIFA 22 builds on that, not only with all-new lighting, physics and rendering technology, but also with fundamental gameplay advances that put the ball-control and player intelligence back into the hands of the players.
The new game engine powering FIFA 22 has a larger emphasis on real-time simulation, on cutting-edge physics, and using AI in a manner that’s more organic, not just reliant on algorithmic controls. All these elements combine to allow you to control the ball so much more naturally.
This is especially evident in the control of the player’s run, which is something that, before FIFA 20
