There have been enough films and television shows about serial killers to fill the world’s Netflix queues. So, it’s likely that when you think of “murder mystery,” you imagine the kind where an ingenue and an avenging protagonist race around the country, who’s not as unkillable as all that.

But at its best, mystery theater is about more than the well-groomed woman in glasses who whips out her pistol while the killer tries to stab her in a Mardi Gras parade. These true-crime performance pieces borrow from the theatrical tradition to create fully realized characters and an immersive environment of a different time and place.

The Long Stroll series, created and performed by Maria de Medeiros, is a collection of murder mystery theater that ventures well outside the boundaries of the genre. Ms. de Medeiros, who lives in New Orleans and teaches theater at Tulane University, has written and performed several productions in this series, including a mystery about a former gang member who has refused to go back to gang life, a detective who discovers an evidence-eluding killer in L.A. and an investigation into a drowning of a young prostitute.
